Although surrounded on all sides by the city of Boise, Garden City has retained its own separate municipal government. It is a relatively small real estate area and is part of the 83714 zip code. Several homes that are actually within Garden City limits are listed in the NW Boise or West Boise areas. The city is bordered on the south by Chinden Blvd, to the North by the Boise River, to the West by the Western Idaho Fairgrounds and to the East by North Boise. The town is aptly named for its heritage, which began with Chinese immigrants creating massive gardens along the fertile Boise River bank. Chinden Blvd, the main street in the area, comes from a portmanteau of "China" and "garden."
Upon the incorporation of Garden City, the gardens were given up by their Chinese caretakers and the area became primarily a place for industrial and commercial operation. However, its prime river side location and close proximity to downtown Boise has spurred an uptick in residential development, including the unique, desirable, and urban-recreation focused community of the Waterfront District. In the past few years, an artisan creative community has also sprung up in Garden City. It includes local artists, craft breweries, cideries, and wineries along the Chinden corridor. There has even been directional signage added to a portion of the greenbelt called "Artisan's Pathway" in order to help people find their way to these businesses.
